Desperate for a win, the Cal Poly soccer team delivered with a thrilling 3-2 overtime triumph over UC-Irvine. The match at Spanos Stadium in San Luis Obispo improves the Mustangs to 7-5 overall, 2-2 in the Big West. The Anteaters drop to 3-9-1, 0-4 in the conference.
Cal Poly freshman midfielder Ruben Duran scored his first collegiate goal in the 16th minute, the Mustangs led 1-0 at the half.
UC-Irvine scored in the 56th minute to tie it. Cal Poly junior forward Mackenzie Pridham gave the Mustangs a 2-1 lead in the 72nd minute but the Anteaters scored four minutes later to tie it.
1:59 into overtime Pridham scored his seventh goal of the season. He is the Mustangs first seven-goal scorer since four-time All-Big West selection David Zamora notched seven in 2009.
The Anteaters outshot the Mustangs 8-6. Cal Poly goal keeper Wade Hamilton had a career high six saves as he improved to 2-3 on the season.
Cal Poly will play at Sacramento State. The Hornets are 7-4-1 overall, 4-0 in the Big West.
