Cal Poly students and staff honored for community service

Cal Poly President Warren Baker hosted his last Community Service Awards Thursday afternoon.

They are presented to students, faculty and staff for their contributions to making life better in San Luis Obispo and elsewhere.

Lauren Herrera was recognized for tutoring students, her volunteer service in Costa Rica and co-chairing a student group called Raise the Respect. It aims to raise awareness of the needs of people worldwide. "You always have time to help someone. Honestly, after the first time you do it and once you feel how amazing it is to spend some of your time and donate some of your efforts to help, I can't even explain it, it just makes you feel amazing. You'll always find time after that," Herrera said.

Eight other individuals and three groups were also honored.
