Cal Poly sweeps Big West Conference Cross Country Championships

Cal Poly freshman Laura Hollander continued her storied season in winning the Big West Conference Cross Country Championship wire to wire in record time while the men's team finished first, second and third led by junior Chris Frias to the team's second consecutive and 12th championship overall.

In winning the race Hollander covered the 6 kilometer UC Riverside Agriculture Course in a time of 19:12.6 and leading the women's team to its third championship and its first since 2001 (2000). Cal Poly edged favored UC Davis by three points.

Hollander broke the course record held by Amanda Moreno of UC Santa Barbara set in 2010 (19:57). The true freshman's time became just the second female athlete to post a sub 20-minute time in the 6K since the BWC championship moved to a 6K distance in 2003.

Sophomore Savannah Pio was the second Mustang to cross the line in seventh with a time of 20:27 followed by senior Vanessa Hancock in eighth (20:33).

Sophomore Megan Breadmore was 11th with a time of 20:40 with senior Alex Ciaraglia the last scoring Mustang in 16th and a time of 21:02.

Other Mustangs competing in the championship included freshman Michelle Read in 29th and a time of 21:26 and junior Kasey Urman in 32nd (21:38).

Freshmen Rachel Bush and Sara Van Dyke rounded out the Mustang runners in 33rd and 40th place with times of 21:40 and 21:54 respectively.

The Mustangs won the championship by placing their five scoring runners in the top 16 and 43 points. UC Davis was second with 46 points followed by UC Santa Barbara with 75.

Host UC Riverside was fourth with 81 points followed by Long Beach State in fifth (107). UC Irvine (177), Cal State Fullerton (198), Cal State Northridge (255), Hawai'i (283) and Pacific (286) rounded out the team scoring.

The Cal Poly men dominated the championship race by placing all five scoring runners in the top 10 with a team total of 25 points. UC Santa Barbara was second with 48 points.

Frias won the men's championship in a time of 24:10 followed by fellow junior Blake Ahrold in second with a time of 24:13. Sophomore Mitchell Moriarty was on their heels in third with a time of 24:14.

Junior Sean Davidson finished ninth with a time of 24:31 followed by the last scoring Mustang, senior David Cardona, with a time of 24:35.

Senior Derek Thomas finished 17th (25:00)while freshman Tyler Huntley was 21st with a time of 25:18.

Senior Michael Johnson and Freshman Kyle Lynch rounded out the Mustang competitors in 26th and 35th place with times of 25:35 and 25:54 respectively.

UC Irvine was third (83 points) followed by UC Davis in fourth (94 points). Long Beach State (147), UC Riverside (155), Cal State Fullerton (182) and Cal State Northridge (227) rounded out the team scoring.
