NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal Poly volleyball team was swept in a Big West Conference match on Thursday in Northridge by the Matadors, 3-0, to fall to 10-14 overall and 4-7 in conference play. Cal State Northridge improves to 22-4 overall and 12-1 in conference matches.
Cal State Northridge won by set scores of 25-13, 25-15 and 25-15. The Mustangs return to the court on Saturday when they travel to UC Davis for a conference match at 2 pm.
Freshman Taylor Gruenewald and senior Megan McConnell led the team with six kills each with sophomore Hannah Schleis adding five kills. Senior Kate Walters led the team with 10 digs with fellow senior Steffi Sooter adding seven.
Casey Hinger led the Matadors with nine kills with Cienna Stinson adding eight kills of her own. Natalie Allen led all players with 11 digs.
CSUN dominated the match, outhitting the Mustangs, .351-.000 and outblocked Cal Poly, 14-2. CSUN held a slight edge in digs, 46-41.
In the first set, CSUN opened a 7-4 lead and maintained a three point advantage and expanded the lead to four , 13-9. CSUN expanded its lead to 18-11 and controlled the set the rest of the way, 25-13.
The second set opened with the teams trading points until CSUN opened a 7-4 lead. Midway through the set, CSUN held a 14-7 lead, forcing a Cal Poly timeout. The Matadors expanded their lead to 17-8 when the Mustangs came back to score two points to cut the lead to 17-10. But the Matadors would put away the second set, 25-15.
The teams traded point to open the third set when the Mustangs opened up a 6-4 lead. The Matadors came back to take the lead, 8-7, and expanded the lead to 11-8. CSUN took control with the score 15-10 and closed the set, 25-15.
