Cal Poly university store sees sales increase since basketball team's historic win

Wednesday was a day that Mustang fans had been waiting for. The University Store in downtown San Luis Obispo was bustling with students, alumni, and fans grabbing their last minute gear to watch the basketball team play in their first NCAA Tournament. Fans on Wednesday said that no matter what the outcome of Wednesday's game, the basketball team beat a ton of odds to get to the NCAA Tournament, and that is a celebration in itself. "People were surprised that we've gotten this far, but they're very proud and just very excited that SLO's getting on the map," said freshman Taylor Champlin. Champlin, who is also an employee at the University Store, said to use the word excitement is an understatement. She said, "We opened up at 10:00 a.m. and I've already sold countless numbers of t-shirts. Somebody came in and bought just a stack of them." Fans like Denis Sullivan have been flocking to the store all day, gearing up for the game and the parties. "Should be a lot of fun, beer and tacos!" Sullivan said about his viewing party. Because the celebration is all for the basketball team, who beat the odds on Saturday by winning the Big West Tournament. It was the first time ever in Cal Poly history. Champlin said, "Ridge Shipley is actually in my dorm, and so our whole entire dorm was just crowded into the TV lounge and it was just crazy. We were all so happy, we couldn't sleep that night. So excited, it was amazing, it was a great feeling." And now the team, and the entire Cal Poly community gets to dance. Sullivan said, "I think everybody's enjoying it, having Cal Poly so successful in their sporting events." If Cal Poly wins tonight, they will take on Wichita State on Friday. Wichita State is the only undefeated team in the country.
