Jonae Ervin led the Cal Poly women's basketball team to an overtime win at Hawai'i on January 8th with 37 points and 10 rebounds. Ervin didn't play an Saturday in the rematch in San Luis Obispo because of a sore knee but the Mustangs were still able to win, 62-60.
Senior center, Molly Schlemer scored 20 points for Cal Poly to give her 1,001 points for her career. The Righetti High School graduate played 36 minutes. Junior guard, Ariana Elegado played all 40 minutes in the win. Elegado had a game high 25 points including a 15 foot jump shot with 19 seconds left to put the Mustangs up 60-57. Elegado hit two free throws to stretch the lead to 5 before Hawai'i made a three pointer at the buzzer.
Junior forward, Taryn Garza had a career high 12 rebounds to go along with 3 points in 25 minutes.
Hawai'i utilized its size to outrebound Cal Poly, 43-41 but the Mustangs outshot the Rainbow Wahine from the field, three point line and free throw line.
Cal Poly improves to 14-8 overall, 8-1 in the Big West while Hawai'i drops to 11-10, 5-4.
The First place Mustangs host second place Northridge on Thursday at 7:00pm. Cal Poly has a 1.5 game lead on the Matadors but lost by five points in Northridge on January 16. Ervin is questionable for the game.
