After splitting the first two games of the series at the Riverside Sports Complex, Cal Poly beat UC Riverside, 7-2 on Sunday to win the three game series. Sophomore right-hander Casey Bloomquist earned his 10th victory of the season while senior catcher Chris Hoo, junior center fielder Jordan Ellis and sophomore shortstop Peter Van Gansen all knocked in two runs.
The third ranked Mustangs are now 38-9 overall, 14-4 in the Big West. They're still a game and a half back of first place UC Irvine (14-1). The Anteaters swept UCSB this weekend. It will be a battle for first place next weekend as Cal Poly will host UCI for three games starting on Friday. The Mustangs will play a non-conference home game against 17th ranked Pepperdine on Tuesday. The Waves beat the Mustangs in Malibu last Tuesday. Both teams will likely drop in the rankings. Cal Poly was 2-2 on the week while Pepperdine was 1-3.
Bloomquist struck out three and walked three, scattering nine hits over six innings to improve to 10-1, he left the game with a 5-2 lead. Junior right-hander Bryan Granger came out of the bullpen to throw two scoreless frames with three strikeouts. Junior right-hander Reed Reilly closed it out with a perfect ninth inning, including two strikeouts.
UC Riverside fell to 20-23 and 8-7 in the Big West with Sunday's loss.
Cal Poly out-hit the Highlanders, 13-10. Van Gansen, sophomore second baseman Mark Mathias, junior left fielder Zack Zehner and sophomore first baseman John Schuknecht all had a pair of hits, with Zehner and Schuknecht contributing doubles.
The Mustangs are ranked 19th in the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) after Sunday's win.
