Cal Poly had a seven-point lead with 3 ½ minutes to play, then managed to survive a missed 3-point shooting attempt by UC Riverside with 1 second left for a 54-52 victory on Thursday night in Mott Gym.
Will Taylor scored 13 points and Chris Eversley added 11 to go along with 14 rebounds for his first career double-double. The Mustangs, who were playing at home for the first time in nearly three weeks, improved to 5-6 in Big West play and 14-11 overall.
The Mustangs started the game slowly and fell behind by as many as 7 in the first half, before going to Taylor and company. Cal Poly took its first lead of the game with 7 minutes to play in the first half on a layup from Taylor. The Mustangs led 21-20 at the half despite shooting just 29% from the floor in the first half.
Cal Poly found its offensive rhythm in the second half and extended its lead to as many as 14 with 10:28 to play in the game. UCR battled back to pull within two points with the ball and time running out. Phil Martin led the Highlanders with 22 points, but he missed the three-pointer at the end of the game.
Cal Poly started the night in seventh place in the Big West, but moved up into a three-way tie for fourth place with UCR and UC Irvine.
The Mustangs continue their homestand on Saturday when UC Irvine visits Mott Gym. Tip off is at 7 pm. The second place Cal Poly women tip off a rare doubleheader with a 4pm game against last place Cal State Fullerton.
