SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Only a month into their season, Cal Poly women's volleyball has doubled their win total from last season(4).
The program currently sits at 8-7 overall after sweeping their weekend matches against UC Irvine(Friday) and Long Beach State (Saturday). A big part of the lady Mustang's success over the weekend was Senior Steffi Sooter, who has led the team to their first 2-0 start in the Big West since 2010.
"Last season has definitely given us determination to come out strong this year. We definitely don't want a repeat of last year and that's something too that we always keep in the back of our minds," Sooter said.
The senior also said that there has been an attitude change from last year, aided by the experience of the team.
"Now we have kind of bought into everything our coaches are telling us. I think we've come together as a team. It's kind kind of like a family," Sooter said.
Second-year head coach Sam Crosson said that the team is balanced and difficult to scout for just one or two players. "We're starting to realize that the group is a lot more cohesive than it used to be and I think that's a big positive step that we've taken over the last couple months as the season started," Crosson said.
The program now has experience, balance, and belief to top it off.
Sooter said, "We just didn't believe as much last year. And I think just this year we're believers now."
The Cal Poly Women's Volleyball team is set to play at Santa Barbara this Saturday, at 7 p.m.
