Cal State, faculty union talks break down

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The latest round of negotiations between California State University and its faculty union over a new contract has broken down with no new talks scheduled.
CSU spokesman Mike Uhlenkamp says negotiators for the California Faculty Association walked out of a meeting on Saturday after two days of talks produced a settlement on a number of outstanding issues that have held up the contract for 23 months.
CFA spokeswoman Alice Sunshine says negotiators left because university representatives said they would not take action on faculty demands such as class sizes and academic freedom so there appeared no point in continuing the talks.
Both sides say they are disappointed that an agreement could not be reached.
If no new talks are scheduled, a fact-finder will be appointed to propose a resolution.
