California inmates brawl at Oklahoma prison; 46 injured

SAYRE, Okla. (AP) - Officials at an Oklahoma prison have confined all inmates to their cells and restricted their movement after widespread fighting left dozens of inmates injured.

Corrections Corp. of America officials said late Tuesday that 16 inmates had been sent to hospitals for treatment and about 30 others were treated on-site by medical staff following the disturbance. No staff members or law enforcement officers were hurt.

The Oklahoma Department of Corrections says fighting between Hispanic and black inmates began shortly before noon at the private, medium-security prison in Sayre. Corrections official Greg Williams said the 2,381 inmates at the facility are from California.

Corrections Corp. officials say they are working with law enforcement officers and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to identify which inmates were involved in the fighting.
