FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities have rescued a California man from the bottom of a mine shaft in northern Arizona's Meteor Crater.

Coconino County Sheriff's officials say 28-year-old Parminder Singh told deputies after his rescue early Friday that he intentionally jumped into the shaft to "appease the gods."

An employee of the park 35 miles east of Flagstaff called the sheriff's office about 4 p.m. Thursday to report a man trespassing at the bottom of the crater, which is closed to the public.

The employee says he saw the man jump feet first into the mine shaft, which is about 100 feet deep.

It took about 30 rescuers from several Arizona agencies more than eight hours to recuse Singh in freezing temperatures.

Authorities say Singh is listed in stable condition at Flagstaff Medical Center.
