A new study shows California has the third highest rents nationwide. But, in terms of cities, San Francisco tops that list.
According to the National Low Income Coalition, the average rent for a two-bedroom apartment in the city is about $1,900 a month. The hourly rate needed to make that rent is about $36.
But, here on the Central Coast, things were a little cheaper. In San Luis Obispo, for a two bedroom, on average, will cost about $1,100. The hourly rate needed to make rent is $22. In Santa Barbara County, it's a little more at $1,300; and the hourly rate needed to pay that is $26.
For Cal Poly student, Kyle Harmon, paying $800 a month for rent is pretty standard; and that doesn't include utilities. "I love San Luis. I don't want to leave but if they can cut me $100 off, that'd be great," said Harmon of Santa Maria.
McKenna and Alexis Barber just moved to Santa Maria from Arizona with their mom. In Arizona, they lived in a house, but now, they live in a 2 bedroom, 1 bath for $900 a month.
"There was a lot that were overpriced, I think. I mean, you can find a 2 bedroom here for about $900 like we pay or a 2 bedroom towards like, Pismo Beach. That's going to be more like $1,200, you know. It really depends on just location," said McKenna Barber.
According to Help-U-Sell Real Estate, which have offices in Santa Maria and Santa Barbara, Santa Maria has the best rent throughout the Central Coast; because it's the cheapest.
