Caltrans will pay tribute to highway workers who have lost their lives while working on state highways.
The agency will hold its 20th annual Worker Memorial Ceremony Thursday morning at the Caltrans District 5 office in San Luis Obispo. The ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. and is open to the public.
Each year during the Worker Memorial Day, Caltrans places the names of those who have died in the line of duty on a memorial plaque in Sacramento. Here on the Central Coast at the District 5 office, a rose is placed for each fallen worker on top of a memorial rock. Their names are engraved into that rock.
Since 1924, eight Caltrans employees have been killed on the job in the Central Coast district. 174 have died statewide.
