The old, run-down buildings along Highway 101 at Camp Roberts are coming down.

The California National Guard began a project today to demolish more than 600 World War II-era barracks at the base.

The demolition will cost $12-million and is being done in three phases.

It's one of several improvement projects at Camp Roberts that also include energy efficiency and utilities modernization.
