Medical researchers in Japan say they have identified a gene whose mutation is linked to various forms of cancer.
The finding could help develop new treatments for malignant tumors that are difficult to cure.
Researchers examined about 900 types of genes found in cells of fibrosarcoma, a type of cancer in the bones.
They found that a mutant form of the gene was producing an abnormal protein that was causing normal cells to turn cancerous.
Experiments showed that cancer cells died once the mutant gene was turned off.
