For the first time the two candidates vying for the state's U.S. Senate seat debated the issues publicly.
Republican Carly Fiorina is challenging Democrat Barbara Boxer, who has held the seat for three terms.
The two answered questions during a formal debate at Saint Mary's college in Moraga.
Senator Barbara Boxer and Carly Fiorina appeared cordial before a packed auditorium at Saint Mary's College, but it did not take long for the gloves to come off.
"Barbara Boxer may say she is fighting for Californians but the truth is she is fighting hardest for another six years in D.C." said Fiorina.
"Through all that pain what did she do to show any sacrifice?" said Boxer, "she took $100 million."
The three-term senator and former CEO of Hewlett Packard covered a variety of issues, from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to Proposition 8.
"For that decision to be overturned by a single judge seems perhaps not appropriate," said Fiorina.
"The only way to get the rights that married couples have, is to go for marriage equality," said Boxer.
One thing the candidates did seem to agree on is that job creation is key to jump starting the state's ailing economy.
"Thats why I'm working to make sure small business gets access to credit and thats why I'm working to stop tax breaks to companies that ship overseas," said Boxer.
"We need to make sure that in particular our small businesses, our family-owned businesses, our innovators, our entrepeneurs are freed from strangling regulation and free from taxation," said Fiorina.
Some of the other topics discussed included gun laws, climate change and partisan politics.
An average of the five most recent public polls shows Boxer getting 45 percent to Fiorina's 41 percent.
About 12 percent of respondents remain undecided.
