Congresswoman Lois Capps is challenging her opponent Abel Maldonado to release his tax returns.
Monday, she posted her own federal tax returns on the internet for every year she's been in public office.
In a statement, the Capps campaign said by releasing this information, voters can see for themselves if the candidates live up to their tax obligations.
Capps tax returns go back to 1998.
In 2011, she listed her income as $235,755 dollars.
That includes her income as a member of Congress, her pension from working as a school nurse, social security benefits, and other investments.
Last year, she paid about $33-thousand dollars in federal taxes.
Monday, her campaign sent a letter to Maldonado challenging him to make his statements public.
Published reports claim he owes as much as $4.2 million dollars in back taxes stemming from tax disputes over his family's farm in Santa Maria and personal expenses.
This was part of the Capps campaign statement issued Monday:
"In light of the many serious questions raised by his tax problems, Mr. Maldonado has over 4 million reasons to post his tax returns on his website and give Central Coast voters the opportunity to judge for themselves the extent to which he has avoided paying taxes under the current code and whether he would personally benefit from his proposals to change it."
The Maldonado campaign released their own statement late Monday afternoon.
"Abel Maldonado will provide his 2011 tax return online on Friday. Hopefully, Lois Capps is prepared to finally talk about her voting record of supporting policies that have punished job creators and run-up massive debts."
