An apparent car malfunction created some tense moments for a 41-year-old Santa Maria woman.
At 12:21 p.m. Wednesday, Aida Ruiz was driving her 2000 Dodge Intrepid north-bound on Hanson Way. As she approached Main Street, the accelerator in her car became stuck. Ruiz was able to make an east-bound turn on Main Street, and set her parking break in an attempt to stop her car.
Police say the car didn't stop and continued on, eventually heading south on Broadway. Ruiz activated her emergency lights and opened the driver's door, as she contemplated jumping from her car.
The Dodge eventually stopped when it crashed into a building at the southeast corner of Broadway and Boone. Both the car and the building were significantly damaged. Ruiz was not injured.
Officers are currently investigating the collision. Anyone with further information is urged to call the Santa Maria Police Department at 805-928-3781.
