California Highway Patrol says a man is recovering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a car chase late Sunday night.

Officers in Coalinga tried to stop the man on Interstate 5 for speeding. They say the man failed to stop, and led officers on a chase.

The man exited on Highway 41 driving towards San Luis Obispo County and then onto Highway 46.

CHP officers and San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Deputies put out a spike strip near Union Road and stopped the pick up truck.

Officers say they heard a gun shot from inside the truck and after a brief standoff determined the man had shot himself with a stolen semi-automatic handgun.

Officers tell KSBY News the investigation in-ongoing.
