Career-high from Schlemer not enough to upset UCLA

Senior center Molly Schlemer scored a career-high 29 points and hauled down 16 rebounds but it was not enough as Cal Poly lost at UCLA, 96-89.

Cal Poly's bench outscored UCLA's reserves 28-6 and the Mustangs made 14 of 16 free throws but the Bruins hit 28 of 40 free throws and got a career high 36 points from Nirra Fields.

The loss drops the Mustangs to 6-7 and improves the Bruins to 6-6.

Schlemer was 14 of 20 shooting, seven of her rebounds were on the offensive end. Junior guard Ariana Elegado scored 21 points while junior wing Kristen Ale contributed 16 points off the bench.

UCLA led 43-40 at halftime. Fields scored five points to open the second half and the Bruins used full-court pressure to extend their lead to 12 points. Cal Poly cut its deficit to three helped by four 3-pointers from Elegado, who made five in the game. The Mustangs pulled to within three with 3:35 to play and again with 32 seconds left but could not get any closer as UCLA scored 14 of its final 16 points from the line.

Cal Poly is off until Big West play starts on January 8th at Hawaii.
