A pair of Central Coast natives combined for 62 points and set individual career-highs as the Cuesta College women's basketball team beat visiting LA Pierce 89-80 in a Western State Conference game between two ranked teams on Thursday.
Sophomore Alyssa Palma, an Atascadero High graduate, led the way with 35 points, including 21 in the first half alone. The former Greyhound drained six 3-point shots. Sophomore Aria Johnson recorded a double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds. She scored 19 of her points in the second half The Morro Bay High graduate was just named the State Female Athlete of the Month.
The Lady Cougars, who are ranked #14 in the Southern California Regional Poll, improved to 2-0 in WSC play and 14-7 overall. LA Pierce came into the game ranked #15 in the region. Cuesta is tied for first in the standings with Santa Barbara City College.
The Cuesta men, ranked 15th in the region, dropped an 80-76 decision to 8th ranked LA Pierce. Oscar Pedroso led the Cougars with 18 points. Cuesta dropped to 1-1 in WSC action.
The Cougars fell behind big and made a late run. Guard Kenny Robinson scored 16 points, Jeremy Landenbergue poured in all 16 of his points in the second half and Plamen Hristov finished with 15 points.
