'Carmageddon' is almost here, and CHP says it could affect our local highways

Carmageddon is upon us.

We are just hours away from the time the first ramps of the 405 freeway in Los Angeles will begin to be closed.

The 53-hour closure of the 405 freeway begins as early as 7:00pm Friday night with ramp closures, then lanes of the highway will be blocked off starting at 10:00pm.

The entire 405 freeway, from Highway 101 to the I-10, will be closed this weekend. Crews will be widening the road.

Caltrans has been telling folks in the LA area to simply stay away. "If you think you know a secret way, you don't," said Mike Miles, District Director for Caltrans. "There aren't any. Everyone else knows them, too."

The closure continues until 5:00am Monday. Ramps and connectors will reopen at 6:00am.

The contractors working on the project have an incentive to stay on schedule. They'll be fined $6,000 for every ten minutes they are late in reopening the freeway.

And it's not just affecting the LA area. California Highway Patrol officer Chris Fisher tells KSBY News to expect more traffic on our local highways this weekend as commuters try to find their way completely away from the mess down south.
