New developments today in the case against Nicholas Bendle, the man accused of decapitating a Santa Maria man.
The prosecution and defense were each supposed to choose a mental health doctor to evaluate whether the 21-year-old's previous insanity plea is valid. Bendle's attorney requested more time to find a doctor.
Bendle will return to court on December 30th. Once the court appoints doctors, they will evaluate his condition and return with a decision.
Bendle is accused of killing a 69-year-old man with a hatchet in Santa Maria last summer while the victim was out for his morning walk.
