CHELMSFORD, Mass. (WHDH) -- A car traveling at a high speed slammed into a telephone pole in Chelmsford. The driver was ejected upon impact.
"It woke me up. I live right next door and I heard the crash. And I didn't know exactly what happened," said Gary Frascarelli, who called 911.
The crash happened in front of his ice cream shop. The shop's security cameras captured the crash.
"Obviously speeding, I think that's quite clear to anyone who watched the video that speeding was involved," said Officer Paul Richardson of the Chelmsford police department.
Richardson said a 21-year-old Billerica man was driving twice the 35-mile-per-hour speed limit.
"The Chelmsford police and fire within four minutes they were here. The response time was phenomenal," said Frascarelli. "Within about 15 minutes, the medflight was up in the air."
The driver was flown to Beth Israel Hospital. His 1994 Honda Civic is considered totaled. The vehicle is in the custody of police as evidence.
Just the week before another pole in the area was hit.
"I've been out here for a number of collisions in that area and a number of fatalities," said Richardson. "You gotta obey the speed limit and you gotta wear your seatbelt."
Richardson said the driver of this crash is lucky to be alive.
