The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released new research on obesity in America.
The report found a third of American adults are obese.
The finding is disappointing to experts after decades of efforts to get Americans to lose weight.
Health care costs related to obesity are running at $150 billion a year and now run the risk of bankrupting the system.
"Our public health care efforts have really not been very successful. It's a very scary problem," Dr. Philip Schauer of Weight Management Clinic.
Mississippi has the highest percentage of obese adults at 35 percent, while Colorado was the slimmest state with a 21 percent obesity rate, according to the report.
