Local cyclists are celebrating the opening of a new bike path. it's part of the $35 million Santa Maria River Bridge expansion project.
Cyclists can now to travel in both directions, where before there wasn't a lane for them to cross over the bridge. They would take Bull Canyon or Highway 1 through Guadalupe, instead.
It's not just for cyclists. The path is also open for runners and walkers.
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Thursday at Preisker Lane near the entrance to the Santa Maria levee recreation trail.
Construction on this project started back in 2011. When finished, the heavily traveled bridge will expand from four to six lanes connecting San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties.
It was funded by a combination of state, federal and local dollars.
