As the investigation into the Boston Marathon bombings continues, some Central Coast runners are home safely and one local runner shared her story with KSBY.
Patty Miller ran her first marathon last year, which was the one in San Luis Obispo. She said her goal was to qualify for the Boston Marathon, and she did. The finish line she worked so hard to get to will never be the same.
"My initial thought, it was a bomb," said Patty Miller, whose instincts were right. "At that moment I didn't feel safe anywhere."
Miller finished the marathon after three hours and 39 minutes. She told KSBY that was 50 minutes prior to the first explosion. When she heard the first blast she was celebrating with fellow runners, who were making their way to their families.
"I feel amazed that my family made it through it, because they were with me. My three boys and my mom and dad," she said. "I am so grateful. They could have easily, easily have been there."
Her family watched the race at mile 25. She said they cheered for her as she endured the remaining stretch.
"The training that went in and the endurance of the race that day it doesn't feel enduring because what is enduring now is the pain the families are going through," Miller said.
Things like the medal she got at the end of the marathon and the finish line are now insignificant.
"It is hard to wear it. It is hard to say that I feel proud of it," she said while looking at her Boston Marathon medal.
The Boston Marathon brings pain, but she will persevere for them, the victims.
"In honor of all the victims and their families and then maybe I would feel real proud to receive this," she said.
Miller wants to plan a run on the Central Coast in honor of the families who lost a loved one, and for those who were injured in the marathon attack.
One day, she hopes to return to Boston.
