Premeditated attempted murder on a peace officer charges, with gang enhancement, were filed Tuesday against an 18-year-old Santa Maria man shot Sunday by a California Highway Patrol officer on Highway 135 near Los Alamos.
Michael Paul Ledesma is charged with using a knife on the officer, assaulting a woman who was with him in a vehicle Sunday and endangering a one-year-old child.
The woman called 9-1-1 for help, saying her partner was threatening her with a knife, said police. When officers responded, that's when they said the man got out of his car and confronted the officer. Police said a veteran C-H-P officer believed he was in danger and fired at Ledesma, striking him several times.
Ledesma was flown to Cottage Hospital, where he remains for treatment of his injuries and is under 24-hour watch by Santa Barbara County sheriff deputies.
He will be arraigned on the felony charges once he is "medically cleared," according to the Santa Barbara County District Attorney's office.
