Jackson Chavez scored twice in the second half to deliver a 3-2 win for the Morro Bay High boys soccer team over defending Los Padres League champion on Tuesday.
Chavez, a senior captain, netted the go-ahead goal about eight minutes into the second half and added his second score about 8 minutes later to give the host Pirates a commanding 3-1 lead with about 25 minutes to play in the match.
Both teams had good looks early on, but could not convert them into scores. The Pirates struck first in the 22nd minute thanks to Chavez. The senior forward dribbled by a Nipomo defender inside the box, kept the ball in-bounds and delivered a perfect cross to Shawn Pacaoan, who tapped it home for a 1-0 Morro Bay lead.
The Titans scored the equalizer on a beautiful goal from Ben Jimenez in the 34th minute. On a free kick just outside the penalty box, the senior delivered a ball that curved inside the post and by the Morro Bay goalie to tie it 1-1 going into halftime.
The Pirates improved to 2-0 in LPL play behind first year head coach Andrew Wilkie and 8-3-2 overall. Already this season, Morro Bay has more wins than all of last year.
Nipomo fell to 0-2 in league and 5-7-2 overall.
