Five Central Coast softball players earned All-CIF First Team honors on Tuesday by the CIF Southern Section.
Righetti High's Katie Chenault was named the Player of the Year in Division 3. The senior led the Warriors to their first CIF title since 1982 with a dominant run in the pitching circle that included a no-hitter in the first round. Chenault finished the season 24-5 with a 1.08 ERA and 19 complete games. She tallied three no-hitters and struck out 288 in 175 2/3 innings. Chenault ranked fourth in the Southern Section and 12th in the state in strikeouts. She also hit .357 at the plate with a team-high 5 home runs and 25 RBI.
Joining Chenault on the Division 3 First Team is junior infielder Gladys Esparza. She hit .357 with 28 runs, 16 RBI and a .432 on-base percentage. The Warriors finished 27-7 and went 12-0 in Pac 7 League play under head coach Scott Nickason.
Two Nipomo Titans earned All-CIF First Team honors in Division 5. Penn recruit Courtney Cuzick was selected for the second year in a row. Cuzick went 18-6 with 20 complete games and 7 shutouts. She allowed just 90 hits in 157 innings pitched. She posted a miniscule 0.69 Era and struck out 267 hitters. She ranks 6th in the Southern Section and 16th in the state in punch outs.
Junior Ashley Ruiz also was named All-CIF. She hit .453 and led the team with 20 runs scored, 34 hits, 17 RBI and 2 home runs. The Titans finished second in the Los Padres League and advanced to the CIF quarterfinals.
Orcutt Academy freshman Sierra Martinez earned a spot on the First Team in Division 7. Martinez hit .530 with a team-high 49 runs scored and 44 hits. She tallied 29 RBI and a remarkable 11 triples and 28 stolen bases. She recorded a .585 on-base percentage for the Spartans, who went 20-5 and picked up the program's first two wins in the CIF playoffs.
