A day care center in Arroyo Grande closed its doors suddenly and unexpectedly, and it's left some parents with questions about what happened, and how can they get their money back.
According to the sign on Kid's Club's door, its owners, Nathan and Linda Belch, closed up shop because of the rising costs of overhead, including payroll taxes and insurance. It also said Community Care Licensing, which is under California's Department of Social Services Department, had "decided not to renew our license in our facility."
KSBY spoke to Oscar Ramirez, the public information officer for the Department of Social Services, and he said the two licenses, taken out by the couple, had been revoked, and a 10-page complaint from the state had been sent to them on March 22.
KSBY received a copy of the complaint, and it is filled with accusations against Kid's Club. Some of the accusations include failure to provide adequate care and supervision, complaints of health and related services, and accountability.
Linda Belch spoke to KSBY on the phone and said what is written in the report does not always accurately depict what happened. She said while she respects the DSS, she is upset and disappointed and said she is doing the best she can to wrap up the end of her business.
Jennifer Colman, a mother of two, who would frequently drop off her children at Kid's Place, said she loved its services and is sad to see it go. On Thursday, Colman said she was concerned about getting her money back from pre-paid day care.
"I just want my money back, obviously what I paid for. And I wished they would stay, it was really convenient," said Colman.
Belch said parents can contact her via Kid's Club's Facebook page, to find out how they can get reimbursed. She said she absolutely plans on issuing back refunds.
Ramirez said Belch was actually supposed to give the state 30-days notice before closing, which is now another violation against her and her husband, but Belch said there was no way to remain open and ask her staff to work for free.
The Belchs have less than 20 days to appeal the state's complaint. Ramirez said neither one will be able to open or apply for another child day care center license for at least two years.
