VALLEJO, Calif. (AP) - A Chinese company has issued a statement in response to a California Senate report about its involvement in the seismic retrofitting of a San Francisco Bay Area bridge.
According to the report, Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industry Co. Ltd. supplied 250,000 bolts of the wrong size for the retrofitting of the Carquinez Bridge to Vallejo.
The bolts were rejected and remade, but the report says they led to a near disaster.
Shanghai Zhenhua said in a statement on its Chinese-language blog Tuesday night California time that it did not provide the bolts used on the bridge.
It added that it had provided 45,000 tons of steel structures for the Bay Bridge and that San Francisco's mayor named July 11, 2011, the Day of Li Jianghua - in honor of the manager who oversaw the project.
