The California Highway Patrol says a man driving under the influence caused Thursday's deadly crash near Shell Beach.
It happened around 4:30 a.m. on Highway 101 North near Spyglass Drive.
CHP says the driver of the 1991 Acura Integra, Joshua Hurt, 21, from Bakersfield, was under the influence of alcohol when the car crashed into the center divider and overturned.
Hurt was arrested and taken to the hospital with moderate injuries.
His 21-year-old male passenger, whose name has not been released, died.
Hurt will be booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail once he is out of the hospital.
