The California Highway Patrol says a driver who caused a collision involving four vehicles near Lompoc early Tuesday appeared to be under the influence.
The CHP says at about 6 a.m., the driver crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic and collided with a pickup truck on westbound Highway 246 approaching Tularosa Road. Before emergency crews arrived, a person at the scene helped direct traffic around the collision. The CHP says that person was hit by another vehicle and has major injuries.
A total of four vehicles were involved. Of the ten people who were hurt, two have serious injuries. It took firefighters with the Santa Barbara County Fire Department 30 minutes to get everyone out of one of the vehicles.
Air ambulances were not able to respond due to thick fog in the area.
The highway was closed to through traffic, with drivers being diverted onto a dirt field around the crash scene.
