Investigators are still trying to figure out why a Cal Poly student was walking on Hwy. 101, before he was hit and killed early Sunday morning.

It happened just before 1:00 a.m. in the southbound lane of the freeway, just south of Santa Rosa Street. Officers say a 37-year-old Pismo Beach man driving a Toyota Tacoma did not see 21-year-old Matthew Hurlbutt walk into traffic and slammed into him at around 65 miles per hour.

According to the Cal Poly directory, Hurlbutt was an industrial engineering student. He was from Upland, CA, according to his Facebook profile and was expected to graduate next year.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
