The California Highway Patrol is investigating whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the death of a Santa Maria man who led officers on a high speed chase through Orcutt Sunday morning.

It started around 1:00a.m. on Clark Avenue at Gray Street in Old Orcutt. Officers say they tried to pull over Erik Bagby, 40, because he didn't have his truck lights on. Bagby sped up, and reached speeds of 120 miles per hour in the west bound lane of Clark, before edging off the road and striking a water main. Bagby's truck flipped. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers say it appears he was killed instantly during the crash.
