CHP officer honored after helping save boy from near drowning

A Santa Maria CHP officer received an award Thursday after saving an 8-year-old boy from a near-drowning.

Alex Huffman was drowning in a pool back in May when CHP Officer Mark Naylor noticed a man had jumped in to save him.

The man brought Alex out of the water and Officer Naylor began to resuscitate him.

After five minutes, Alex started to breathe and was taken to the hospital where he made a full recovery.

Alex and his father, Larry, were in the crowd Thursday to help honor Officer Naylor.

Larry said, "We've met him once before between now and then. You know, it's just a wonderful feeling to see him to know that he was there when we needed him and he knew what to do."

CHP Chief Reggie Chappelle presented Officer Naylor with a Certificate of Accommodation for saving Alex.
