City council votes to replace Marsh Street bridge

The bridge at Marsh Street in San Luis Obispo will be replaced.

The city council on Tuesday night voted five to zero to move forward with a $4.4 million plan to build a new bridge.

The existing structure was built in 1909 near the intersection of Marsh and Santa Rosa Streets. It is in need of repair and a structural review showed maintenance would not be enough.

According to city council member John Ashbaugh, the new design will be consistent with the historical features on the old bridge. The plan is also to bring back light fixtures that will resemble the the gas lamps from the early 1900s.

The next step is an environmental review.

The bridge is expected to be complete in about three years, Ashbaugh said.
