City workers in Pismo Beach were busy Friday cleaning up the mess thousands of beachgoers left behind.

Crews picked up 20 cubic yards of trash Friday morning. Cal Poly students had Thursday off for Caesar Chavez day so they joined the crowds already at the beach. At one point, thousands of people descended on a particular stretch of Shell Beach, and that brought dozens of police officers out as well.

"It was pretty out of control," said Scarlett Aguilar, who goes to Cuesta College. "There was a lot of just crazy stuff going on, a lot of people. I'm from San Diego and the beach is never that crowded."

The day was pretty peaceful but there were three arrests for public intoxication and one medical emergency because of too much alcohol.
