Some Santa Maria city workers were doing their part to observe "America Recycles Day." Folks from the Utilities Department were handing out reusable shopping bags today at the Santa Maria Town Center Mall.

The first 500 people received free tote bags to help raise awareness about reducing waste.

"Put blankets in it, go to the grocery store instead of using plastics, I can use this. So, if I ever have grandchildren, they'll enjoy the Earth as much as I have," said Kathy Niebruegge of Lompoc.

The free bags were made possible through a state grant from Cal Recycle.
