The city of Atascadero is considering renaming the Charles Paddock Zoo. The Atascadero Parks and Recreation Commission met Thursday night to discuss the idea, but no action was taken.
Some say the name is a limiting factor in the marketing and branding of the zoo. Most zoos and aquariums in California have converted to a name that includes the location of the facility. The city says it has not compiled a list of options, but some of the names that have been thrown out are "Atascadero Zoo" or "Central Coast Zoo."
The commission will discuss the idea further in March. It says it wants to make sure the legacy of Charles Paddock continues no matter what the decision. The Charles Paddock Zoo was named after Chuck Paddock, a San Luis Obispo County parks ranger. Paddock is considered to be the founder of the zoo, which was established in 1955.
