WASHINGTON (AP) - Roger Clemens' lawyer has been grilling a key witness about his memory -- and his honesty -- at the pitcher's perjury trial today.
Clemens told a congressional hearing in 2008 that he never used steroids or human growth hormone. But former strength coach Brian McNamee has testified that he injected Clemens with both.
Defense lawyer Rusty Hardin put an easel next to the witness stand with the words "MISTAKE," ''BAD MEMORY" and "LIE" written on it. He then cited a series of statements McNamee had made and asked him to put them in one of those categories. McNamee acknowledged one case of a "bad memory."
But when Hardin asked, "Do you sometimes just make stuff up?", McNamee leaned into the microphone and said softly but assuredly: "I didn't make it up."
McNamee did concede that the first time he injected Clemens, the pitcher had asked for help with a "booty shot" and did not say "steroids." The trainer says he assumed Clemens meant steroids because he'd overheard a conversation between Clemens and admitted steroid-user Jose Canseco.
McNamee has spent 12 hours on the stand so far, and he's expected back on the stand for more tomorrow.
