Clothing, supplies needed for children in emergency situations

Children in Northern Santa Barbara County are taken from their homes every week and put in custody of Child Welfare Services.

They often have to leave very quickly and don't have time to grab their favorite personal belongings.

To help make the situations less traumatic, a group called GoBags Santa Maria hopes to purchase six hundred bags and fill them with clothes, toys and toiletries for children of all ages.

"A lot of times when children are coming into care, they don't have their familiar items and it's important for them to feel like they have their own personal clothing, toiletries and school supplies. These bags are a way to ensure those things," said Amy Krueger, Social Services Manager for Santa Barbara County.

If you'd like to donate items, drop off locations in Santa Maria include the Rose of Sharon Florist Shop at 703 E. Main Street and the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce at 614 S. Broadway.

There will also be a "Stuff the Bag" event on May 11th at 3596 Skyway Drive in Santa Maria.

You can also get more information by going to the GoBags Santa Maria page on Facebook or email GoBagsSantaMaria@gmail.com

The projected is sponsored by the Leadership Santa Maria Valley class of 2013.
