After leading the Cuesta College baseball team to its 18th-consecutive playoff appearance and 14th Western State Conference title during that stretch, Bob Miller has been named the conference's Coach of the Year.
The Cougars finished the regular season on an 11 game winning streak and earned the #8 seed for the Southern California Regional Playoffs that open Friday.
Cuesta pitcher Andrew Nelson was named the WSC Pitcher of the Year. The sophomore ranks third in the state with 10 wins and second with 87 strikeouts. He won his last five decisions and owns a 3.10 ERA.
Lompoc High graduate and freshman left-handed pitcher Lucas Martin was an unanimous First Team pick. He ended the regular season with back-to-back complete game and posted a 7-4 mark with a 3.03 ERA. He also leads the state with 101 innings and is second with 6 complete game. He and Nelson have combined for 17 of the Cougars' 21 wins.
Catcher Parker Hindle, shortstop Zack Domingues, third baseman Andrew Montanari and left fielder Spencer Ruggles earned All-WSC First Team honors. Marco Murillo and Scott Shields, both San Luis Obispo High graduates, earned Second Team accolades.
Hindle leads the Cougars with 29 RBI and 13 doubles. Domingues is hitting .315 with 19 RBI. He leads the state with a program-record 49 walks and a .540 on-base percentage. Ruggles, an Atascadero High graduate, also earned a Gold Glove Award. He leads Cuesta with 15 extra base hits, including 4 triples and 2 home runs. His 7 career triples rank fourth all-time at Cuesta
Murillo leads the Cougars with 42 runs scored, 9 stolen bases and a .347 batting average. Shields is hitting .253 with 17 RBI and has played every infield position, except shortstop.
Cuesta opens a best-of-three game series against 9th seeded Cypress at home on Friday at 2pm. Game two is at 11 am on Saturday with a third game, if needed, to follow.
