Coast baseball falls 3-1 in CIF quarterfinals

An early three run deficit was too much to overcome for the Coast Union baseball team, as the Broncos fell at home 3-1 to Nuview Bridge in the CIF Division 7 quarterfinals on Friday afternoon. The Broncos, who had lost in the first round the last two years, finished the season 15-7 overall. Nuview Bridge, the top seed in Division 7, moved on to the semifinals with a 22-2 mark. Coast starter Grant Magnunson got into trouble in the top of the first and loaded the bases with nobody out. The Broncos turned a double play on a ground ball to second, a throw to home for the force and a toss to first to get Gerry Harris. However, Magnunson walked the next hitter to reload the bases and plunked Tomas Mitchel to force in a run. Nuview Bridge added 2 runs in the second on a ground ball to second to drive in one and a single to right to plate another. Coast trailed 3-0 until Lane Sutherland singled up the middle to score Tommy Howard and get the Broncos on the board. However, that's as close as the Broncos would get. Another rally in the fourth was thwarted on a stellar play from shortstop Steve Ojeda, who dove up the middle and gloved Quinten Raethke's ground ball with a runner at third and two outs. Ojeda threw from his knees to get a hobbling Raethke at first base to save a run and end the inning.
