The Coast Guard rescued a mariner from his sinking boat just before midnight Wednesday.
Coast Guard crews responded after a report that a 56-foot recreational boat, Firefly, was caught in the surf zone off Cayucos.
The boater was able to get the boat out of that surf zone and head south to Morro Bay Harbor. The Coast Guard was going to escort him there. That's when crews say three to four feet of water leaked into the engine room and the boat started to sink.
Crews were able to get the mariner off the boat before the vessel sank approximately one and three-quarter miles southwest of the entrance to Morro Bay Harbor.
An investigation is underway.
