The Chumash Nation Annual Tomol Hop took place this weekend on the Central Coast to honor Chumash villages.
On Saturday, the Chicqawt' Village was honored in Morro Bay, and the Tsipxatu Village was honored in Avila Beach on Sunday.
This is done in preparation for their journey from Ventura to the Channel Islands.
The event included sunrise and launch ceremonies, blessings, and stories, and was a way for the Northern Chumash Tribal Council and Chumash Maritime Association to share aspects of their culture with local residents and visitors.
On Sunday evening, paddlers will take tomals, which are the center of the ceremony in the Chumash nation, out onto the water.
This is their fifteenth year for the event.
