After striking out 764 batters in three varsity seasons at Arroyo Grande High School, Jillian Compton was back on the Central Coast pitching for Fresno State.
The Bulldogs played a doubleheader at Cal Poly and Compton pitched game one. The true freshman gave up an un-earned run in the first inning but had a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the fourth. The Mustangs scored twice in the fourth and then three times in the sixth, the final two runs coming on a Whitley Gerhart home run. Cal Poly won the first game, 6-5.
Compton pitched all six innings for Fresno State, allowing five earned runs. She gave up nine hits and three walks while striking out three. Her record drops to 8-10.
Fresno State won the second game with a five run outburst in the ninth inning. The game went to extra innings tied at one before the Bulldogs scored five runs off of Jordan Yates in the ninth to win 6-1. Yates pitched 8 1/3 innings in game two after pitching three innings in the first game.
The split moves Cal Poly's overall record to 12-20-1, the Bulldogs are now 19-14. The Mustangs return to Big West play with two games at Cal State Fullerton on Friday and one game on Saturday. The Mustangs are 1-2 in conference play.
