LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. (AP) - California transportation officials say Interstate 405 has been closed in both directions in northwestern Orange County after three steel beams fell from a construction site into lanes, injuring a construction worker.
Department of Transportation spokesman David Richardson says the accident happened around 2:45 a.m. Wednesday as crews were setting the 130-foot beams onto a new overpass in the Rossmoor area just east of Long Beach. One beam on a crane bumped two already in place, and all three tumbled into the southbound lanes.
A worker was transported to a hospital with unknown injuries.
Caltrans says all lanes near the intersection with Interstate 605 will be closed until at least 8 a.m. as workers use a crane to remove the beams.
Commuters on the key north-south artery are urged to find alternate routes.
